The Lord has made a promise to late repentance, but where has he made a promise of late repentance? He converses and delights Himself with me incessantly, in a thousand and a thousand ways, and treats me in all respects as His favourite.

I am filled with shame and confusion, when I reflect on the one hand upon the great favors which God has done, and incessantly continues to do; and on the other, upon the ill use I have made of them, and my small advancement in the way of perfection. I wish you could convince yourself that God is often nearer to us, and more effectually present with us, in sickness than in health. If we knew how much He loves us, we should be always ready to receive equally and with indifference from His hand the sweet and the bitter; all would please that came from Him.

Many do not advance in Christian progress because they stick in penances and particular exercises, while they neglect the love of God, which is the end. Pray remember what I have recommended to you, which is, to think often on God, by day, by night, and even in diversions.

To approach God requires neither art nor science, but only a heart resolutely determined to apply itself to nothing but Him, or for His sake, and to love Him only. To be with God, there is no need to be continually in church. We may make an oratory of our heart wherein to retire from time to time to converse with him in meekness, humility and love.

Funeral Poems & Readings – A Life Celebrant

We move along the surface of things going from one quick base to another, often with a frenzy that wears us out. There are times when we stop. We sit still. We lose ourselves in a pile of leaves or its memory. We listen and breezes from a whole other world begin to whisper.

We drift toward compromise and call it tolerance; we drift toward disobedience and call it freedom; we drift toward superstition and call it faith. We cherish the indiscipline of lost self-control and call it relaxation; we slouch toward prayerlessness and delude ourselves into thinking we have escaped legalism; we slide toward godlessness and convince ourselves we have been liberated.

Sometimes a neighbor whom we have disliked a lifetime for his arrogance and conceit lets fall a single commonplace remark that shows us another side, another man, really; a man uncertain and puzzled, and in the dark like ourselves. Samuel Chadwick. There is no power like that of prevailing prayer—of Abraham pleading for Sodom, Jacob wrestling in the stillness of the night, Moses standing in the breach, Hannah intoxicated with sorrow, David heart-broken with remorse and grief, Jesus in sweat and blood. Add to this list from the records of the church your personal observation and experience, and always there is cost of passion unto blood. Such prayer prevails. It turns ordinary mortals into men of power. It brings power. It brings fire. It brings rain. It brings life. It brings God.

Anyone can devise a plan by which good people may go to Heaven. Only God can devise a plan whereby sinners, who are His enemies, can go to Heaven. Lewis Sperry Chafer. The only thing that is hard is not doing His will. Oswald Chambers. For one man who can introduce another to Jesus Christ by the way he lives and by the atmosphere of his life, there are a thousand who can only talk jargon about him. Get into the habit of dealing with God about everything.

Unless in the first waking moment of the day you learn to fling the door wide back and let God in, you will work on a wrong level all day; but swing the door wide open and pray to your Father in secret, and every public thing will be stamped with the presence of God. How many people have you made homesick for God? If the Spirit of God has transformed you within, you will exhibit Divine characteristics in your life, not good human characteristics. If you are a saint, God will continually upset your program, and if you are wedded to your program, you will become that most obnoxious creature under heaven- an irritable saint.

If your hopes are being disappointed just now, it means that they are being purified. It is by no haphazard chance that in every age men have risen early to pray. The first thing that marks decline in spiritual life is our relationship to the early morning. It is easy to say we believe in God as long as we remain in the little world we choose to live in; but get out into the great world of facts, the noisy world where people are absolutely indifferent to you, where your message is nothing more than a crazy tale belonging to a bygone age, can you believe God there?

Keep your life so constant in its contact with God that His surprising power may break out on the right hand and on the left. Always be in a state of expectancy and see that you leave room for God to come in as He likes. Living a life of faith means never knowing where you are being led. But it does mean loving and knowing the One who is leading. It is literally a life of faith… a life of knowing Him who calls us to go. Never make a principle out of your experience; let God be as original with other people as he is with you. Never tolerate the idea of martyrdom about the cross of Jesus Christ.

The cross was a superb triumph in which the foundations of hell were shaken. There is nothing more certain in time or eternity than what Jesus Christ did on the cross: He switched the whole of the human race back into a right relationship with God. Not how much we give, but what we do not give, is the test of our Christianity. Some prayers are followed by silence because they are wrong, others because they are bigger than we can understand.

The dearest friend on earth is a mere shadow compared with Jesus Christ. The destined end of a man is not happiness, nor health, but holiness. The destiny of every human being depends on his relationship to Jesus Christ. It is not on his relationship to life, or on his service or his usefulness, but simply and a solely on his relationship to Jesus Christ. The life of faith is not a life of mounting up with wings, but a life of walking and not fainting.

Faith never knows where it is being led, but it loves and knows the One who is leading. The most marvelous ingredient in the forgiveness of God is that he also forgets, the one thing a human being can never do. The remarkable thing about fearing God is that when you fear God you fear nothing else, whereas if you do not fear God you fear everything else.

The tiniest fragment of obedience, and heaven opens up and the profoundest truths of God are yours straight away. God will never reveal more truth about himself till you obey what you know already. The value of a life can only be estimated by its relationship to God. There are times when you cannot understand why you cannot do what you want to do. When God brings the blank space, see that you do not fill it in, but wait. The blank space may come in order to teach you what sanctification means, or it may come after sanctification to teach you what service means. If there is the slightest doubt, then He is not guiding.

There is not only fear, but terrible danger, for the life unguarded by God. We are in danger of forgetting that we cannot do what God can do, and that God will not do what we can do. We impoverish God in our minds when we say there must be answers to our prayers on the material plane; the biggest answers to our prayers are in the realm of the unseen.

When a little child becomes conscious of being a little child, the child-likeness is gone; and when a saint becomes conscious of being a saint, something has gone wrong.

Whenever the insistence is on the point that God answers prayer, we are off the track. The meaning of prayer is that we get hold of God, not of the answer. Whether our work is a success or a failure has nothing to do with us. Our call is not to successful service, but to faithfulness.

Worship God in the difficult circumstances, and when He chooses, He will alter them in two seconds. Do you know that nothing you do in this life will ever matter, unless it is about loving God? Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist. Children already know the dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed. I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought, and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder. It is the highest and holiest of the paradoxes that the man who really knows he cannot pay his debt will be forever paying it. No man can break any of the Ten Commandments.

The Truth, The Whole Truth, and Nothing But The Truth

He can only break himself against them. No one can break any of the Ten Commandments. On the third day the friends of Christ coming at daybreak to the place found the grave empty and the stone rolled away. In varying ways they realized the new wonder; but even they hardly realized that the world had died in the night.

What they were looking at was the first day of a new creation, with a new heaven and a new earth; and in a semblance of the gardener God walked again in the garden, in the cool not of the evening but the dawn. When it comes to life, the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude. Gratitude is the memory of the heart; therefore forget not to say often, I have all I ever enjoyed. Lydia M.
