His insights are often fascinating, always opinionated, usually hilarious — Justin Fox, Getaway. Harvie achieves an admirable balance between describing places, chatting to people, providing historical background and recounting entertaining anecdotes — Ina Randall, The Herald.

There are also so many characters that were only briefly introduced in the book, but their faces remain vivid in the imagination, painted by a few aptly chose words — Annette Bayne, The Citizen. He writes as one of us and it is amazingly different from reading the work of "outsiders" even those as brilliant as Paul Theroux — Ina Randall, The Herald. Along the way, he loses his travelling companions, his awning poles and on several occasions, his temper, but never his sense of humour.

An opinionated and intelligent read — Pippa de Bruyn, Best Life.

A rollicking tale of adventure in eight African countries - so refreshing to read an hilarious uplifting book about Africa for a change — Caroline Hurry, Saturday Star. This book will definitely appeal to 4x4 enthusiasts and fans of quirky travel writing — Katherine Graham, Stud Breeder. Dis die tipiese Pom-humorsin en sarkasme wat die boek so lekker laat lees As jy die pad wil vat, vat hom gerus met Chris Harvie — Bakkies, Beeld. Quite unputdownable. Harvie can certainly write.

After the rains, it is easier to spot big game such as elephants, but big game sightings can be unreliable during the dry season. Nearby Ol Pejeta is a better bet for those seeking more of a big game safari experience. El Karama is a very peaceful, family-oriented camp situated in acres of wildlife rangelands, and has both a safari and homestead feel, retaining a low-key charm that appeals to the many repeat guests.

Bandas are all river-facing, and the camp is situated a short distance away from a working farm. Service is efficient, and in-house guides exude endless patience when dealing with small children. Accommodation is a mix of bandas, tented rooms, and a larger so-called Hobbit House, all furnished tastefully and to a high standard. The Hobbit House, set back a little distance from the mess area, is a cosy, quirky option for families. With the exception of one banda which has an outside bathroom, the facilities are all ensuite.

Food is generally good, and for those self-catering, the camp provides cooks to whip up your meals. It can be hard to entertain small children in the bush, but El Karama gets it just right. Activities range from filling in lion paw prints with putty to take home later , modelling animals out of mud, not to mention the swimming pool with a variety of noodles, rubber rings and armbands for kids to use. When compared to other lodges in Laikipia, El Karama is still very good value.
